And the winner is… Still Serving Veterans for 2015 PRo Bono Project

August 6, 2015  |  News, Projects  |  Comments Off on And the winner is… Still Serving Veterans for 2015 PRo Bono Project

The 2015 PRo Bono Project committee and NAPRCA board members are thrilled to announce that Still Serving Veterans has been selected as this year’s project winner. We are all so excited to work with an organization that is doing such great things for our military members and their families.  Still Serving Veterans (SSV) is an Alabama-based Veterans’ service organization that empowers wounded warriors, Veterans, and their families to optimally transition into meaningful new careers and post-military lives with all the benefits and services that they have earned-at no cost to them.

The PRo Bono Project committee members will assist the organization by helping to develop a realistic and actionable plan for branding and marketing to support their future expansion throughout the state. The project will include a phased plan that ensures Still Serving Veterans is implementing best practices in all areas of communication.

This year’s committee was overwhelmed with the number of applications they received from deserving organizations. While we cannot develop a full strategy plan for each group, all candidates will receive 2 complimentary tickets to attend any upcoming NAPRCA meetings of their choice and learn valuable skills to enhance their communication efforts.

NAPRCA Members Use Their Time and Talents to Give Back Through 2015 PRo Bono Project

The NAPRCA PRo Bono Project invites TN Valley nonprofits to enter their organization as a potential recipient of a free public relations strategy plan, developed by a team of skilled, public relations practitioners. This public outreach project, started in the early 90s, calls on NAPRCA members to use their unique skill set to lend a helping hand to groups that do so much for others on a daily basis.

For many non-profits, one of their greatest hurdles is the lack of a public relations strategy. These organizations devote themselves to helping others in need, but often times, due to lack of resources or time, their services and message do not reach their target audiences. Those audiences may be groups of people in need of help, or even groups of people looking to help others through the donation of their time or money.

The winning non-profit will be selected by the committee and PRCA Board. Projects with well-defined and realistic objectives are what make a great candidate. The selection committee is also seeking projects that will motivate NAPRCA members and inspire them to make a meaningful impact in their community. Organizations interested in applying for the 2015 PRo Bono Project should email completed applications to no later than June 30.

Giving Back Gives You a Leg Up.

The PRo Bono Project team is looking to add to its roster. In addition to helping select this year’s winning non-profit, the committee will meet with the organization’s staff to assess its needs. Not only will this allow members to learn more about their local non-profit community, but it also allows every member hands on experience in developing a strategic PR plan from the ground up. If you are looking to dive deeper into the PR community, reconnect with other members or serve as a guide to new professionals on the scene, please volunteer for this worthy cause. Committee meetings will begin in May to select the project recipient. Interested members should email

NAPRCA to Partner with The Arc of Morgan County for the 2014 PRo Bono Project

August 7, 2014  |  News, Projects, Students  |  Comments Off on NAPRCA to Partner with The Arc of Morgan County for the 2014 PRo Bono Project

NAPRCA is proud to announce The Arc of Morgan County will be the recipient of free public relations strategic planning through the 2014 PRo Bono Project.

The PRo Bono Project invited Tennessee Valley nonprofits to apply for free public relations strategic planning from our chapter. Nonprofit groups from across the community submitted their needs through an essay-based application. The NAPRCA Board of Directors evaluated the applications and awarded the volunteer services to The Arc of Morgan County.

The Arc of Morgan County is a non-profit organization that advocates for and empowers individuals with developmental delays. Currently, The Arc provides after school and summer programs. Adult services are limited in Morgan County, and The Arc has developed a plan to fund “People First,” which is an adult advocacy service that offers help in self-directed goals such as employment, civic activities or independent living. The Arc will fund “People First” by establishing daycare services for children with developmental delays. They plan for the profits generated from the daycare to support the adult programs which are not currently funding.

The Arc needs NAPRCA’s help developing a strategic plan to promote these services to the community. And now the NAPRCA needs the help of members to serve on the committee and make it happen!  Join the committee to help put RPIE (research, planning, implementation and evaluation) into motion for this highly deserving organization.

Send an email to Leah Gradl for more information.

There is also a PRo Bono Committee currently meeting with the BBB of North Alabama to assist in developing a strategic plan for their 50th anniversary celebration. Contact Lori Miller  if you’re interested in that committee.

Free PR Assistance through NAPRCA’s PRo Bono Project

May 19, 2014  |  News, Projects  |  Comments Off on Free PR Assistance through NAPRCA’s PRo Bono Project

Back in 1991, the North Alabama chapter launched a community projects program to give local PRCA members an opportunity to share public relations skills with non-profit agencies in need of assistance. It had a good run and helped a lot of deserving organizations.

In 2014, we’re bringing it back!   UPDATE: If you’re looking for the current PRo Bono Project status, go to our PROJECTS section:

Introducing the PRo Bono Project

The PRo Bono Project allows Tennessee Valley nonprofits to apply for free public relations strategic planning. The nonprofit group outlines what they need. NAPRCA members help show them how to achieve it. This is community service at its best and a great way to network with peers.

We have one organization already selected, and we’re opening the application process to select another (see farther below) — kicking off an annual cycle of assistance that connects us to our community in significant ways.

The Inaugural PRo Bono Project: Better Business Bureau of North Alabama

At our April membership meeting, Michele Mason of the North Alabama BBB explained they want to take advantage of the local BBB’s 50th anniversary next year. They have intentions to pursue two simultaneous objectives: create a campaign that uses this anniversary to convey messages about the BBB, as well as host an event to announce the objectives of the BBB’s Character Foundation.

Are you a member of PRCA and interested in helping to craft a plan? Email We’ll have a meeting in June to start the brainstorming process.

Process for Nonprofits to Compete for PRo Bono Project Assistance

We’d like to choose another project this year.  We are certain there are plenty of organizations that want strategic help, so we’re going to have to be selective. We may eventually move to a separate selection committee–but for now, the NAPRCA Board will gather and evaluate requests.

What kind of help are we willing to give?

Truthfully, the process will be selective and subjective. We’re going to pick something that we believe will be invigorating for our members. Something that has well defined and realistic objectives. Something that we can impact in a meaningful way.

Applying is as easy.

In a one page essay, tell us about your need and what you’re trying to accomplish. Also tell us why you think you’d benefit from PRCA’s help. Be sure to include contact information, a link to your organization’s website and timeline requirements. Then attach it to an email and send to with the subject heading “PRo Bono Project 2014.”

We’ll let you know that we have received your application and we may even ask a few follow-up questions to help us decide.  We’ll take applications through June 30, 2014. We’ll announce winners on this website the last week of July.

Good luck applicants!
